About this story

Aina’s first tooth has fallen out. She tucks it into a moon pocket by her bed as “growing-up mail,” but a breeze blows the pocket into the dark. Milu, a little mouse who carries the night mail, helps her search. A button looks like the tooth, and a scary shadow turns out to be Aina’s slipper once she turns the lamp. When the pocket’s ribbon gets stuck, Milu asks for help, and together they set it free.

What children can explore

  • Losing a first tooth is a normal, exciting part of growing up
  • Light makes shadows: turning the lamp shows what a scary shape really is
  • Asking for help is a brave thing to do

Talk about it after reading

  1. What was the big scary shadow, and how did Aina find out?
  2. Milu needed help with the stuck ribbon. Why is asking for help brave?
