About this story

On a quiet afternoon in her rooftop garden, Nola meets Bobo, a little cloud learning to make rain. Bobo hiccups, and its only drop bounces away. Puffing harder just makes wind. Nola checks the soil, sees that it is dry and decides the garden needs a gentle drink, not a bigger puff. With small, slow puffs, a soft shower falls right above the flower, and a drop soaks down to the roots.

What children can explore

  • Look before you act: check what is really needed
  • Plants drink through their roots when water soaks into the soil
  • Helping a friend who is still learning

Talk about it after reading

  1. Why didn’t puffing harder help the garden?
  2. What did Nola notice when she looked at the soil?
  3. If Bobo visited your garden, what would you help it notice first?
